A night guard is a custom made dental appliance designed to protect teeth from damage due to clenching or grinding of the teeth, or bruxism. Night guards may also provide some relief to patients suffering from jaw joint (TMJ) problems. Bruxing can put enormous pressure on the muscles, tooth ligaments, and other surrounding structures of the jaw and can cause jaw joint disorders, headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, ear pain, tooth pain, tense muscles, and excessive wear on the teeth. These symptoms together generally are referred to as temperomandibular joint disorders (TMD).
